A trial using 16QAM modulation was conducted on MAREA cable, the world's highest undersea cable, showed higher speeds of 26.2 terabits/ sec on a 4000-mile transatlantic cable jointly owned by Microsoft & Facebook. The team Infinera performed the test & found 20 % improvement on the 20 Tbps each pair of the cable. This implies upgrades on existing cables will increase their capacity & achieve greater speed at long distances.
