Firhad Hakim become Kolkata's first Muslim mayor

Following the resignation of Sovan Chatterjee from the post of Kolkata mayor on November 22, Kolkata gets its first Muslim mayor. West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim after getting 121 votes in the 144-member Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) gets this honour. Hakim, who is serving as the portfolio of municipal affairs, said his victory was also a “moral defeat” for the BJP. Hakim became 29th mayor of the city since independence.
