Poverty tourism: Tourists offered real ‘Mumbai slum’ experience

Content HeadTo experience the reality of life in Mumbai slum, David Bijl, 32, a Dutch citizen who works for a Mumbai NGO has started a scheme to offer the travellers a night’s stay in the Mumbai slum, including sharing a public toilet with other families. The tourists will stay with a family and the cost (2,000 rupees per night) will go to the host family. Many are criticizing this as ‘poverty tourism’.
