For the first time, marine biologists recorded singing by one of the rarest whales on the planet. NOAA used acoustic recorders to capture repeated patterns of calls made by male north Pacific right whales. Scientists detected 4 distinct songs over 8 years at 5 locations in the Bering Sea off Alaska's southwest coast. Right whales make a variety of sounds, and a predominant call sounds like a gunshot.
