Researchers have developed a simple yet inexpensive system that they claim can predict when lightning will strike in 10 to 30 minutes, within a 30-kilometer radius obtaining data from any weather station. The system works on a combination of standard meteorological data and artificial intelligence. The researchers now want to continue their testing by using the technology in the European Laser Lightning Rod project.
