Researchers have discovered dozens of genes, previously believed to play similar roles across organisms, are in fact unique to humans and now help in explaining how humans came to exist. These genes code for specific proteins called transcription factors or TFs which control gene activity. TFs identify specific snippets of DNA code called motifs and use them as landing sites to bind the DNA and turn genes on or off.
