The MoEFCC informed Rajya Sabha that India lost 9.4 million trees across forest areas to development projects over the past 4 years. The loss of trees can be equated to the loss of 20.8 crore kg of CO2 per year, which would have been stored by 9.4 million trees. 1 tree can absorb almost 22 kg of CO2 per year, on average. Maharashtra & Telangana reported greater loss of trees due to more development projects in the area.
