Despite warnings of environmental damage, China began operating the world's second-largest hydropower station on Monday, which officials hailed as a milestone toward Beijing's carbon neutrality goals. The overall installed capacity of Baihetan is 16,000 megawatts. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced as a result of the enormous engineering projects, which have caused worry in neighbouring nations.
