Amsterdam researchers develop the world's fastest molecular shuttle successfully, all thanks to the clever chemical design. The molecular machine is a rotaxane, a molecular structure with a ring-shaped molecule round an elongated wire-shaped molecule. The ring can move from one end to another just like a shuttle-bus. The moving part shifts over 1 nanometer relative to each other in a record-breaking time of 30 billionth of a second.
