Barbados has elected its first-ever president. 72-year-old Dame Sandra Mason has been chosen to hold the top post and she will be sworn in on November 30, the day when the country celebrates its 55th anniversary of independence from Britain. The step paves the way for removing Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state of the country. A joint session of the House of Assembly and the Senate elected Mason for the post.
