The Second Continental Congress adopted a new name for the "United Colonies" on September 9, 1776.
Since then, the name United States of America has served as a symbol of liberty and independence. In 1754, Benjamin Franklin popularised the idea of a political union in his famous "Join, Or Die" cartoon. The concept of unity became a reality a generation later.
