1985 The Wreck of the sunk ship Titanic is found in the North Atlantic Ocean
The Titanic sank in 1912 after colliding with an iceberg on its maiden voyage. Several expeditions attempted to map the sea bed using sonar in the hope of finding it, but were unsuccessful. A joint French-American expedition led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution located the wreck in 1985. The wreck has sparked widespread interest and has been visited by numerous expeditions. Controversial salvage operations recovered thousands of items, which were conserved and displayed in public.
