He had returned in a state of war this time. He came to exact vengeance on Pedro Alvares Cabral, who had arrived in Calicut earlier. Da Gama was greeted as a hero upon his return to Portugal, and he was dispatched on a second voyage to India in 1502, where he ruthlessly battled with Muslim traders in the region.
