Imrat Khan, an Indian sitar and surbahar performer and composer, was born in Calcutta, British India, in 1935.
Ustad Imrat Khan is a world-renowned surbahar performer, a deep-toned, sitar-like stringed instrument invented by his great-grandfather, Ustad Sahabdad Khan, and Ustad Imdad Khan. The instrument's four-octave range is utilised to play the ultra-strict dhrupad style of Indian classical music. Imrat contributed to pioneer the distinctive gayaki ang approach to Indian instrumental music by forming one of the earliest sitar-and-surbahad duos with his older brother, Vilayat Khan.
