The 2.77 acres, previously claimed by both Hindus and Muslims, were the site of a 16th century mosque was demolished by right-wing mobs to unearth and find a 1st Century temples in Ayodhya, a town in Uttar Pradesh, in 1992. However, on November 9, 2019, India's Supreme Court ruled unanimously that a Hindu temple to the god Ram could be built at the site, while giving Muslim representatives a separate 5 acres of land in the town.
