Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister and a key figure in the Indian independence struggle, dies of a suspected heart attack at the age of 74 in 1964.

Jawaharlal Nehru was a central figure in India during the mid-twentieth century. He was an anti-colonial nationalist, secular humanist, social democrat, and author. In the 1930s and 1940s, Nehru was a key figure in the Indian nationalist movement. He was India's prime minister for 17 years after the country's independence in 1947. After 1962, Nehru's health began to deteriorate, and he spent months recuperating in Kashmir until 1963. Some historians attribute his precipitous decline to his surprise and dismay at the Sino-Indian War, which he saw as a betrayal of trust heart attack took his life on 27th May 1964.
