On May 24, 1819, Queen Victoria was born. She became Queen of the United Kingdom at the age of 18 and reigned for 63 years, making her Europe's longest-serving monarch. She governed during a time of British imperialism during which the British Empire expanded, and she was appointed Empress of India. She became synonymous with a period of social conservatism and economic development. She was proclaimed Queen on June 20, 1837, and reigned until her death in 1901, 63 years later. Throughout terms of both industry and empire, Britain saw tremendous growth in the nineteenth century. Although her popularity fluctuated during her reign, towards the conclusion of her reign, she had become a symbol of British empire and pride.
