In 334 BC, Alexander the Great's Macedonian army defeats Darius III of Persia in the Battle of the Granicus.
The Battle of the Granicus, fought in May 334 BCE, was Alexander the Great's (356-323 BCE) first significant victory over the Achaemenid Empire's soldiers. Alexander had crossed the Hellespont with his united Macedonian and Greek army and landed on Anatolia's coasts. His mission was straightforward: to fight Darius III and capture the huge Persian Empire. He got his first opportunity in May 334 BCE, when he met the Persians on the banks of the Granicus River. Following his triumph over his satraps, he would face Darius in combat twice more, first at the Battle of Issus and later at the Battle of Gaugamela.
