Bachendri Pal became the first Indian woman to summit Mount Everest in 1984.
Ang Dorje and a few other climbers joined the team to reach the summit of Mount Everest on May 22, 1984; Bachendri was the only woman in this group. They arrived at the South Col and spent the night at Camp IV at an elevation of 26,000 feet. At 6:20 a.m. on May 23, 1984, they resumed their trek, climbing "vertical sheets of solid ice" with frigid winds gusting to 100 km/h and temperatures ranging from 30 to 40 °C. At 1:07 p.m. on May 23, 1984, the crew reached the top of Mount Everest, and Bachendri Pal made history. She accomplished this on the day before her 30th birthday.
