Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is assassinated near Madras in 1991 by a female suicide bomber.
Rajiv Gandhi was set to speak at an electoral rally in Sriperumbudur. He was in such a rush to get there that he travelled without his personal security chief from Vishakhapatnam. Rajiv Gandhi arrived at Sriperumbudur around 10.10 p.m. on May 21, 1991. A large crowd had gathered to greet Rajiv Gandhi. A song was playing that praised Rajiv Gandhi and invoked the name of his mother, Indira Gandhi. "Don't be concerned. Take it easy, "Rajiv Gandhi told Anusuya, a policewoman. This was his final statement. A few seconds later, Rajiv Gandhi's own seven-year-old prophesy came true. Dhanu, an LTTE suicide bomber, detonated the explosives on May 21, 1991, as she bent to touch Rajiv Gandhi's feet and the former prime minister sought to raise.
