In the year 1897, John Philip Holland, the designer of the first successful submarine that can run submerged for a significant distance and combines electric and gasoline engines, launches it in the United States.
He was finally successful with a privately produced type called Holland VI, which debuted on May 17, 1897. This was the first submarine with the ability to go submerged for any significant distance, as well as the first to combine electric motors for submerged travel and gasoline engines for surface usage. John Philip Holland successfully completed test runs of the first modern submarine off Staten Island in March of the following year. His ideas were officially acquired by the US Navy just over two years later. The first US Navy submarine, the USS Holland, was formally commissioned many months later. It was named for its creator, John Philip Holland.
