Junko Tabei of Japan becomes the first woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 1975.
Junko Istibashi was born in a tiny farming hamlet in Fukushima prefecture in 1939. Junko was a small youngster who was apparently thought frail and vulnerable as one of seven children. Junko Tabei chose to be recognised as the 36th person to summit Everest, despite the fact that her accomplishments—becoming the first woman to summit the world's tallest mountain and the first to climb the Seven Summits—required more than exceptional talent and fitness. Tabei battled intense mid-century misogyny, violating traditional expectations for women, who were regarded to be little more than housewives at the time, particularly in her home nation of Japan.
