The operation, codenamed Operation Neptune Spear, was led by the CIA, with the Joint Special Operations Command, or JSOC, directing the Special Mission Units participating in the raid. In addition to SEAL Team Six, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), better known as "Night Stalkers," and operators from the CIA's Special Activities Division, which largely recruits from former JSOC Special Mission Units, took part in the exercise.
