On May 2, 2011, soon after 1:00 a.m. PKT, Osama bin Laden, the founder and first leader of the Islamist terrorist organisation al-Qaeda, was assassinated in Pakistan by United States Navy SEALs of the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group (also known as DEVGRU or SEAL Team Six). The operation, codenamed Operation Neptune Spear, was led by the CIA, with the Joint Special Operations Command, or JSOC, directing the Special Mission Units participating in the raid. In addition to SEAL Team Six, the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), better known as "Night Stalkers," and operators from the CIA's Special Activities Division, which largely recruits from former JSOC Special Mission Units, took part in the exercise.
