Tarantino was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and grew up in Los Angeles. He began his career as an independent director in 1992 with the release of Reservoir Dogs, a criminal thriller partially funded by the sale of his script True Romance (1993); Empire named Reservoir Dogs the "Greatest Independent Film of All Time." His second film, Pulp Fiction (1994), a criminal comedy, was a critical and commercial triumph, winning multiple prizes, including the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award.
