People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA for short, is the world's biggest animal rights group, with over 700,000 members. Ingrid Newkirk and Alex Pacheco founded the organisation on March 22, 1980, with the goal of "complete animal liberation," opposing the use of animals for food, study, entertainment, and even as assistance dogs for the physically crippled.
