Stephen William Hawking, who lived from 8 January 1942 to 14 March 2018, was an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, and author who was the director of research at the University of Cambridge's Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the time of his death. He was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge from 1979 until 2009. In October 1962, he began his academic studies at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he received his PhD in applied mathematics and theoretical physics with a specialisation in general relativity in March 1966.
