In 1926, Daimler-Benz merged two pioneering German automobile firms, one founded by Karl Benz and the other by Gottlieb Daimler. Benz and Daimler both claimed to be the inventors of the gasoline-powered automobile. In 1885, Benz created his first automobile, which had a one-cylinder gasoline engine, and began selling them in 1887. In 1883, Daimler developed a succession of gasoline-powered motors, and in 1885, he was granted a German patent for a three-wheeled gasoline-powered vehicle.
