In 2001, The Fast and the Furious was released in theaters
"The Fast and the Furious," a criminal drama set in the clandestine world of street racing in Southern California, opens in theatres around the country on June 22, 2001. Little did the film company realise at the time, but the car-themed drama would go on to become the most successful series in Universal Pictures' 104-year history. With The Fast and the Furious, director Rob Cohen delivered on a $38 million budget. Earning $40 million or more in the first weekend is amazing enough. The most striking aspect of the first film, however, is that it was inspired by a tale published in the May 1998 issue of Vibe magazine.
