On June 20, 2001, the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, World Refugee Day was observed for the first time. The day is marked across the world to call attention to the situation of refugees and to mobilise political will and resources to assist individuals in rebuilding their lives as soon as possible. Refugees will continue to contribute to a stronger, safer, and more dynamic world if given the opportunity. As a result, UNHCR's World Refugee Day campaign this year calls for increased involvement of refugees in health systems, schools, and sports.
