In the year 1888, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly Victoria Terminus), the busiest railway station in India, was opened in Bombay.
The Chhatrapati Shivaji station, originally known as the Victoria Terminus, opened in 1888. Designed by British architect F.W. Stevens, the skyscraper became a symbol of Bombay (Mumbai), and the city was dubbed the "Gothic City" owing to the architectural styles of this spectacular monument. Previously, the 'Bori Bandar' station in Eastern Mumbai served as the hub for all commercial and trading activity in the city. The Great Indian Peninsular Railway operated in this region in the 1850s, giving it the moniker 'Bori Bandar,' and it began its first rail service covering a total distance of 34 kilometres to Thane.
