During WWII, the German Air Force, known as the Luftwaffe, commanded the European sky with their fleet of advanced and effective fighter planes. Kurt Tank, a German Aeronautical Engineer and Test Pilot, was in charge of design development for these projects. Tank spent two decades after the war building aeroplanes in various nations, including a spell in India. Kurt Tank worked with the state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited in the late 1950s, developing the HAL HF-24 Marut. On June 17, 1961, the fighter jet had its first flight. On April 1, 1967, the first production Marut was formally delivered to the IAF.
