World Oceans Day was initially suggested in 1992 during the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit.
The concept of a "World Oceans Day" was first proposed in 1992 at the Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit as a way to celebrate our shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the critical role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it. The UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea is actively organising various World Oceans Day activities to increase awareness about the role the UN and international law may play in the sustainable development and use of the oceans and its living and non-living resources.
