The United Nations launched World Environment Day in 1972 as a consequence of debates on the integration of human relationships and the environment during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Two years later, in 1974, the inaugural World Environment Day was held with the theme "Only One Earth." In the years afterwards, WED has evolved into a forum for raising awareness about environmental issues such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illicit wildlife trafficking, sustainable consumerism, sea-level rise, and food security, among others.
