In the year 1972, INS Nilgiri, first India built modern-age warship, was commission in Indian Navy
Between 1972 and 1981, six ships were built. The 14th Frigate Squadron was formed by vessels of the class. The lead ship, the INS Nilgiri, was India's first major warship, built in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Yarrow Shipbuilders. The Nilgiri Hills inspired the class and its lead ship, the INS Nilgiri.
