In Khorana's continuous pursuit of artificial genes, cracking the genetic code was a diversion. Har Gobind Khorana relocated his laboratory to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970, where he stayed for the remainder of his life. He ultimately finished the whole synthesis of a functioning gene outside of a live creature in 1972. He also demonstrated that it could operate properly in a bacteria.
