In 2008, United Nations General Assembly declared today as International World Bicycle Day
The General Assembly declared 3 June World Bicycle Day, recognising the bicycle's uniqueness, longevity, and versatility, as well as the fact that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally fit sustainable mode of transportation that promotes environmental stewardship and health. It urged stakeholders to promote the bicycle as a tool for fostering sustainable development, improving education, including physical education, for children and young people, promoting health, preventing disease, promoting tolerance, mutual understanding, and respect, and facilitating social inclusion and a culture of peace.
