For his actions during the 1999 Kargil War, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration. During the three-month conflict, Batra was killed in action by Pakistani troops near Area Ledge, Point 4875 in Kargil, formerly Jammu and Kashmir.
