In 1950, India's first constitution goes into force, and Rajendra Prasad is chosen as the country's first president.

On January 26, 1950, India's Constitution was ratified. Over a three-year period, the 299-member Constituent Assembly wrote India's constitution. The Constitution Assembly had its inaugural session on December 11, 1946, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad was overwhelmingly chosen as its President. On December 9, 1946, the Constituent Assembly met for the first time, with 205 members in attendance, including 9 women, and was presided over by Dr. Sachchidananda Sinha.
