The Institution of Calcutta was established in 1857 as the first full-fledged university in South Asia.
The East India Company's Court of Directors submitted a despatch to the Governor-General of India in Council in July 1854, proposing the formation of the Universities of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay. On JANUARY 24, 1857, the University of Calcutta was established in response to that dispatch.
