Psy's "Gangnam Style" becomes the first YouTube video to exceed one billion views in 2012.
On December 21, 2012, South Korean musician Psy's "Gangnam Style" became the first music video to exceed 1 billion views on YouTube. When it surpassed the then-maximum of 2.14 billion views, it "broke" YouTube's play counter. For over five years, the mega-hit, which highlights the lifestyle associated with Seoul's opulent Gangnam District, ruled supreme on YouTube. In July 2017, Wiz Khalifa's video for "See You Again," featuring Charlie Puth, dethroned it.
