Gustave Eiffel, the French engineer and architect responsible for the design and construction of the Eiffel Tower, was born in Dijon, France in 1832.
Eiffel, a trained engineer, formed and built a firm specialising in metal structural construction, the crowning result of which was the Eiffel Tower. He spent the final thirty years of his life doing experiments. He graduated from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1855, the same year Paris held the first World's Fair. He was born in Dijon in 1832. He spent several years in the South West of France, supervising construction on the big railway bridge in Bordeaux, 1864.
