George Washington died between ten and eleven o'clock at night on December 14, 1799. His wife, who sat at the foot of the bed, his friends Dr. Craik and Tobias Lear, his housemaids Caroline Branham, Molly, and Charlotte, and his valet Christopher Sheels, who stood in the chamber throughout the day, surrounded him.
