Dia Mirza was born on December 9, 1981, in Hyderabad, India, to an interracial family of German and Bengali descent. Her father, Frank Handrich, was a German graphic and industrial fair designer, architect, artist, and interior designer, and her mother, Deepa, was a landscape and interior designer. She currently works as a volunteer counsellor at drug treatment centres. Dia debuted in regional cinema with Bengali filmmaker Pratim Dasgupta's festival favourite Paanch Adhyay in 2012. In the same year, she added a new layer to her film career by becoming a producer and establishing Born Free Entertainment.
