Rajendra Prasad, born on December 3, 1884, was an Indian independence campaigner, lawyer, academic, and, later, the country's first president, serving from 1950 to 1962. He was a trained lawyer and politician from India. During the Indian Independence Movement, Prasad joined the Congress and rose to prominence as a significant leader from the Bihar area of Maharashtra. Prasad, a Mahatma Gandhi devotee, was imprisoned by the British in 1942. Prasad served in the federal government as Minister of Food and Agriculture after the constituent assembly elections in 1946.
