Nagaland is admitted to the Indian Union as a state in 1963.
Nagaland, a picturesque north-eastern highland state, was established on December 1, 1963. Over the course of 150 years, a convoluted (and at times contentious) set of events resulted in Nagaland becoming the 16th state of the Indian union. In 1816, much of what is now Nagaland and Assam fell under Burmese control. After ten years, the British East India Company took over Assam and gradually expanded its grip over the Naga Hills. Because the Nagas, as Nagaland's tribes are generally known, had little written history, information of them before to the British era is limited.
