
The North Atlantic Treaty, also known as the Washington Treaty, is the treaty that serves as the legal foundation for and governs the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). On April 4, 1949, the treaty was signed in Washington, D.C.
The treaty went into effect on August 24, 1949.
