The first nuclear research reactor in India, Apsara, began operations in 1956.
APSARA was the first research reactor in Asia to reach criticality when it did so on August 4, 1956. It was a pool-type reactor with a 1 MW output that used 4.5 kg of highly enriched uranium in the form of plates as fuel. Both the moderator and the coolant were made of light water.
