Cena moved to California in 1998 to pursue a career as a bodybuilder after being born and raised in West Newbury, Massachusetts. In 1999, he made his professional wrestling debut for Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW). In 2001, he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), and was initially assigned to Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW).
