Tatya Tope, a leader of the 1857 First War of Independence, died in 1859.
Tantia Tope (February 16, 1814 – April 18, 1859) was a general in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and one of its notable leaders. Tantia Tope is widely regarded as the best and most effective rebel general, despite his lack of formal military training. Ramachandra Panduranga Yawalkar was born in Yeola to a Marathi Brahmin family. Tantia was given the title Tope, which means commanding officer. Tantia, his first name, means "General." He advanced with the Gwalior contingent after the British reoccupied Kanpur (then known as Cawnpore) and forced General Windham to retreat from the city. He was a personal adherent of Nana Saheb of Bithur. Tantia Tope later came to Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi's aid and seized the city of Gwalior with her.
