He and his wife, Savitribai Phule, were pioneers in Indian women's education. In 1848, Phule established his first girls' school in Pune, at Tatyasaheb Bhide's residence, or Bhidewada. He and his followers founded the Satyashodhak Samaj to achieve equal rights for people of lower castes. This organisation, which worked for the upliftment of the oppressed classes, was open to people of all religions and castes.
